Pediatric Summer Safety Tips
Dr. Salzmann shares her wisdom on water, wheels, weather & wear.
“From the rising of the sun to its going down the Lord’s name is to be praised.” Psalm 113:3
School has finally ended. Our children rejoice in shedding layers of clothing, socks and shoes! They romp and roam in a renewed sense of play! Summertime is here!
Unlike our children, we as parents may not find it easy to unwind. With all the beauty summer bestows, safety rises to the top of the parent priority list. Take heart. Here are four simple preventative ways to help ease the stress of summer fun.
WATER: Everyone needs a swim buddy. Never allow a child/teen to go into the water alone.
WHEELS: Anything with wheels (bicycle, scooter, four-wheeler) must require the use of a helmet.
WEATHER: Check daily temperatures and avoid going outside in the hottest hours of the day if possible. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Seek shade and take cooling off periods.
WEAR: (over 6 months of age) Use 50 block sunscreen when outdoors. When in wooded areas or taller grass, use insect repellent and do those tick checks. Do not forget to reapply sunscreen and insect repellent as directed.
Just remember, life happens. It is always best to have easy access to the phone number for Poison Control and the addresses of local pediatric Urgent Cares or Emergency Rooms.
You are never too old to learn. CPR and first aid skills can prove to be invaluable tools for parents of active busy children and teens. See the links below for online as well as in person classes.
No matter where your family romps and roams, setting rules and being prepared can be the easiest steps to making it a fun and memorable summer.
